Wool and silk
The art of processing wool and silk, which existed until the 18th century, is a fundamental part of Follina’s glorious history. Already by the 1200s there were many wool mills in the area, leading to Follina becoming an extremely important centre for the production of wool and fine silks, some of which were even sent to the Most Serene Republic of Venice. In the second half of the 1700s, due to a strong reduction in water arriving from some of the springs, almost all of the wool and silk industries shut down. The Follina legacy, however, lives on today in the Paoletti wool mill, which produces high quality fabrics for the fashion market, and in the Serica della Marca silk factory, which continues the thousand-year old tradition of the monks.
